Pencil Cases

Over the past few days I've been doing some sketching, and with each thing I realized I needed more to draw than I thought. Which is totally a personal thing, you can really draw with whatever you like. However, I like to draw with a number 2 mechanical pencil or those funny pencils you got as a child where each little piece of led was connected to a piece of plastic and you had to push it through. Yes, I actually really love drawing with those and they're about a dollar for four of them at Micheal's. I've made a little pencil case full of the things that I find necessary.

  • Pencils (I have five ready to go, but make sure I only use one)
  • Eraser (I use a tri tip one)
  • Prismacolor fine line marker (I have a set of six), I love using these when I'm just going a black and white sketch to give things a little bit more of a finished look.
  •  Sharpie Marker
  • Pencil sharpener (for some reason I have two)
I think it's good every once in a while to clean out your pencil case/bag because I know mine tends to end up with pencil shavings and other nasty, dirty stuff in the bottom that makes my eraser all gross. Also, I like to have a small set of colored pencils that are on the cheaper side just to play around with. The one's I've been using aren't called anything special, I think they're either from the dollar section of Micheal's or the dollar store. But either way they work surprisingly well, they don't mix quite as well as I would like but I don't want to use up my entire collection of Prismacolors on something that I might not even end up liking let alone framing or giving away.

Everything that I've been using is all stuff I either already had or stuff from the dollar store/dollar section of craft store. I don't believe it's really that necessary to go out and buy brand new expensive things when you're just "learning". And I use quotation marks because this is more of a relearning process as apposed to someone who has never drawn before. If you haven't drawn before, I'm sorry if I'm going too fast or saying things that you don't understand yet, but you'll get there in no time.

To everyone else, good luck. And just have fun with it. Don't stress out about having certain things, all you really need is a pencil and a piece of paper. You don't even need a sketchbook, although, I think it's nice to have all your drawings in one place. That's what my mom would always tell me, keep your drawings in one place. She got me in the habit of keeping a sketchbook when I was about six of seven. So as you can imagine, I have a  ton of filled sketchbooks laying around. Well, now I'm rambling.

Don't stress people, just have fun, draw, relax.

Disney Art Challenge: Update

Here is a snap shot of my finished Pocahontas.

Honesty moment: I got upset at the hand and tried to do a cover up of it, that part didn't turn out that great. I'm happy with the rest, however, it did take me about four tries till I got to a pose and sketch that I thought looked good over all and that I was happy with. I looked up a few tutorials on drawing female heads and faces so that I could get a "refresher course" on faces. It was nice to have something to look at instead of pulling straight from my imagination. I think my favorite part of this drawing is the eyeshadow and hair. I hope everyone had fun with their character, I did. Sure, it took a few tries and a little frustration. But once I started getting to what I liked, I was happy and starting to get excited about art all over again.

Disney Art Challenge

I'm really big into Disney movies, I especially love the live action ones. My favorites right now are Read It and Weep and The Teen Beach Movie, and my animated favorites are Pocahontas and Dumbo. I thought as something to get the mind going I could do a little challenge, it may be a little early but I just want to loosen up and have a bit of fun. I mean that's what art really is about, fun!

Here's the break down, pick any one, or a few, of your favorite Disney characters. You could pick your favorite princesses, animals, or live action characters. Think of how you would describe them, jot down a few good points, try not to be too exact.

Example:
Pocahontas
  • Native American
  • Long black hair
  • blue and white shell necklace
  • red arm tattoo
  • short deer skin dress
It doesn't even have to be that long of a list or that precise, imagine a character all your own. Why not add a few things that you think they should have that they weren't originally drawn with, like with Pocahontas you could draw her with feathers in her hair or moccasins. The important thing is for your finished drawing to have enough of the same characteristics so that you can tell who it is. Make this your own, your style, your own colors, the way you would imagine them looking.

When you're done, you can e-mail your picture if you want me to post it in my art gallery :) I'd love to see what you come up with. I'm going to post my finished picture soon as well, promise.

Good Luck! And remember, have fun <3

Welcome My Fellow Starving for Art Artist

Follow me on my journey to learning on how draw, all over again. A new perspective on art, everything from pencil sketches to digital art work. I fell out of drawing while I was pregnant, so basically I haven't seriously been drawing for almost a year. I used to draw what seemed all every day all day, but let's face it. As we get older, we have more things to do. And for moms there is more then enough daily work cut out for us. But, I miss drawing more then anything, so I'm going to dive head first. Start all over. Learn from the great masters and the every day artists. Let's learn together! I'll post about everything I learn once a week and your input and experience is more then welcome. I'm going to explore as many mediums as I can and as many different styles as possible for me.
